John Coppolino is our guest speaker, and his topic is: Angelfish in Reef Aquaria: From QT and Adaptation to Pairing and Spawning

Of the numerous brightly colored and personable families of reef fish that brought many of us into the hobby, perhaps none is more popular than that of angelfish. However, as our hobby has evolved to include a much higher percentage of reef aquariums over “fish-only”, angels are often excluded out of fears they are not “reef safe.” When angels are kept in reefs, it is often only a single specimen, out of fears that angels cannot be mixed together. Many of these blanket misconceptions are based on misinformation, hearsay, and outdated advice. In “Angelfish in Reef Aquaria,” we’ll discuss the cutting edge techniques you need to know to successfully keep angelfish together in your reef aquarium for years, from proper QT and adaptation to attaining nightly natural displays of spawning pairs or harems and everything in between. “Angelfish in Reef Aquariums” is of interest to all angelfish lovers from the casual observer to the angelfish nut!

We are meeting at the Irving Bible Church from 4pm to 7pm on Saturday, Dec 5th.
Irving Bible Church
2435 Kinwest Pkwy # 100
Irving, TX 75063
Google Maps

John Coppolino’s innate passion for fish was nurtured growing up on an island on a lake in Northern New Jersey with a fish loving father and a mother allergic to everything with fur and feathers!

A saltwater hobbyist since age 11, John began working at a large regional aquarium store as soon as he obtained working papers in high school, and in college went on to study reef fish in Bermuda and the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador where he lived (and met his wife!) for about two years after obtaining his B.S. in biology.

John now lives in Northern Virginia with his wonderfully supportive wife and two young children, and keeps over 1000 gallons of saltwater aquariums with over twenty angelfish spread throughout, with most in pairs or harems in reef tanks. These include a trio of Pygoplites diacanthus (Regal angelfish), a trio of Centropyge joculator (Joculator angelfish), and the mixed species pair of Centropyge resplendens / Centropyge fisheri that created the first tank bred hybrid angelfish.

John travels yearly with work to Hawaii and Guam, where most free time is spent underwater! John writes articles and has spoken at conferences and reef clubs on the topic of angelfish, and has contributed to the newly published book “Angelfishes of the World.”

We hope you will attend this excellent presentation, free to members of DFWMAS. Guests: $10

This event is for members and guests trade (or sell) corals. People bring bagged corals in coolers. Others set up small aquariums to display their livestock. Some ideas that have worked well:

1) Bring a cooler with you to take your corals home. You want the water temperature to stay stable, especially now that the weather has cooled off.
2) Bring pictures of the parent colony. This can be photographs in a plastic sleeve, on a laptop, in a picture frame with rotating images, or even on your fancy cellphone.
3) Bring towels to clean up your area completely. When done, it should look like you were never there, better than when you arrived.
4) Mark bags clearly. Print up a price list. Mark prices on the aquarium. The easier it is, the more smoothly it will go.
5) If you need electricity, be prepared. (Let us know, first of all. ) Bring a long extension cord, tape to tape it to the floor, power strip, etc.
6) Share a table if you don’t plan to bring a lot of items.
7) Used equipment can be sold as well.
8 ) Bring lots of cash.

$10 each for non-members wishing to sell livestock or used gear.

As the Dallas / Fort Worth Coral Farmers Market concludes on Saturday, DFWMAS will have a special speaker presenting:

Greg Hiller of the Boston Reefers will be speaking to our members about water chemistry. One of the requests that comes up from time to time by our members is the need for deeper topics. While we have many newer hobbyists in the club, we also have a lot of members that have been in this hobby for years and years. This special meeting is to satisfy that need, and we invite our members to not miss this event.

If you are new to the hobby, don’t be scared off - however, you better plan on taking notes since part of it may go right over your head. That’s okay, the same thing happened to me in 2002. What you hear may not make sense now, but later you’ll be saying - ooooh, I remember that, and it makes total sense now!

Location:
Addison Conference Center
“Sephora” room
15650 Addison Rd.
Addison, TX 75001

Time: 4pm to 7pm

Talk title: Reefkeeping Chemistry - What You Need to Know - from Novice to Annoying Know-It-All

You must be a paid member of DFWMAS to attend. Seating is limited.

About Greg Hiller:
Greg Hiller has been active in the reefkeeping hobby since 1996, starting out in the early days using Compuserve’s Fishnet forum as a troubleshooting resource. The lessons learned online from experienced aquarists resulted in such rapid coral growth in his tanks that he needed to learn and develop techniques of coral propagation/fragmentation. Greg has raised several species of marine fish and propagated dozens of species of soft and hard corals, and anemonies/corallimorphs. Greg is a founding member of the Boston Reefer’s Society (BRS), served as president for two years, and was a member of the board of directors for several years. As a frequent monthly meeting speaker, Greg has helped educate and contribute to the success of many Boston area hobbyists.

Greg holds a Ph.D. in chemical/biochemical engineering from University of California at Berkeley which he believes has contributed to his success in the reefkeeping hobby. Understanding the basics of chemistry, combined with biology and engineering have helped with numerous fishy-type projects from breeding and raising seahorses to building calcium reactors. Greg has authored a number of articles for online hobbyist publications, most dealing with coral propagation techniques, and chemistry aspects of the hobby. An avid scuba diver since 1998, he’s made several trips to locals in the Caribbean, but prefers diving the reefs of the south pacific due to the wider variety of coral, fish and invertebrate species. When not tending to his 400 gallon SPS coral dominated reef tank, Greg works for a major biopharmaceutical company in the bioreactor process development group.

About Brian Plankis: Brian is the President of the Reef Stewardship Foundation and holds a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston, a MS degree in Educational Technology and a BS in Natural Resources and Environmental Science from Purdue University. Brian was the original founder of Project DIBS and one of the founding members of the Reef Stewardship Foundation. His research interests includes integrating emerging technology into science education, ocean literacy and environmental literacy, sustainability initiatives, and online community development.

Brian entered the aquarium hobby with freshwater tanks and spent seven years keeping freshwater fish while breeding various species of live bearers and angelfish. He set up his first saltwater tank, a 29-gallon, in 1999 and currently keeps a 100-gallon breeding system. He also has spent over 200 hours volunteering for the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois and the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network in Galveston, Texas.

His aquarium interests include fish breeding, invertebrate identification and reproduction, coral propagation and reproduction. Many important issues facing the hobby today interest him, including: educating new hobbyists, the hobby’s effects on natural reefs, the humane treatment of animals, and research on live rock hitchhikers and invertebrates.

When he’s not involved with any of the above activities, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Christine, their daughter, Serena, and playing a variety of sports.

About Eric Borneman: I am a coral reef ecologist from the University of Houston. My primary research areas are coral diseases, sexual reproduction of corals, restoration of Caribbean acroporids and ornamental trade issues. My research involves determining the role of apoptosis in coral diseases, notably in white band disease and other white syndromes. I am a project leader and on the scientific advisory group of SECORE, an international group of aquarists and researchers working on the sexual reproduction of corals and focusing on multiple aspects of threatened species conservation. I am also the science advisor of The Reef Stewardship Foundation, a group whose mission is to foster a diverse stewardship community that protects coral reefs through collaborative action, research, education and aquaculture initiatives. The Reef Stewardship Foundation is a non-profit group utilizing collaborative research, ocean literacy programs, classroom education and aquaculture as conservation tools.

For eighteen years, I have been extensively involved in marine ornamentals and am considered an internationally renowned expert in the field of coral husbandry. I received the “Aquarist of the Year” award for contributions to the field of coral husbandry in 2002, and have written two books on the subject, including the acclaimed book, Aquarium Corals. I have contributed many articles, reports, papers and book chapters to both the scientific and the international aquarium communities spanning twelve years, and I have lectured worldwide on the subject of coral husbandry. I began diving coral reefs at the age of twelve and have been fortunate enough to see coral reefs before their decline in the 1980’s, but unfortunate enough to have witnessed their remarkable and tragic decline in what seems like the blink of an eye.

Club meeting: 7pm to 9pm

Topic: Setting up a Fish Room for an In-Wall Display Tank - With good preparation and planning, the room behind your reef tank can be a huge asset. Learn what to do before you start, as well as what can be done now to improve an established ‘man cave.’ Lighting, temperature, ventilation and the foundation are all important considerations, plus much more. This talk will be good for the DIYer as well as those that prefer to hire a contractor.

Speaker Bio: Marc Levenson has been in the hobby for over 12 years, but most know him by his username ‘melev’ of melevsreef.com - a site that was set up to help others be successful in the hobby. Taking what he has learned from others as well as from personal experience, he’s documented a variety of topics ranging from acrylic work to making your own fish food and quite a bit in between. He has served on the Board of Directors for MASNA, was editor for Reefkeeping Magazine, has articles in printed magazines, co-authored an e-book, and has been recording a podcast (Reefcast) since 2006. He cares for a 280g reef tank that recently turned five years old.

When he’s not traveling to speak to other clubs across the nation, he’s here helping with DFWMAS. Over the years, he has served as Moderator, Newsletter Editor, President and later Ex-Officio, and currently is the Membership Coordinator for the club.
