December Meeting

The December meeting is special. This will be our Winter Social. We will be flying in a public speaker, and hope you'll enjoy her presentation. Adelaide Rhoades of Oceanpods.com will be here to talk about these tiny specks of life that we all desire to keep in our tanks, to nourish fish like Mandarins and more.

December 3, the first Saturday of the month; the event will run from 7 to 10 pm, at the Bullpen in the Ft Worth Stockyards. You can arrive a little early. There will be room for as many as 150 to attend, and we do hope you'll choose to attend. This is a catered event, and Coburns Catering will provide the vittles. Not only will you hear about copepods, you will also get a brief presentation on the history of the Bullpen, which is quite sordid and surely delightful. There will be a cover fee to attend this year, $10 per person. This helps defray some of the cost of the event, which will run around $2500 (est), and give us an accurate head count of how many are attending.

Last year, we did mention we would have to charge for the next Winter Social, and many of you stated you wouldn't mind. We hope you still are of the same mindset. Everyone will be seated comfortably, and all this effort is being done for you.

This event is for DFWMAS members only. If you want to attend, you need to be a card-carrying paid member.

I just confirmed with Adelaide (we had some major email troubles) and she is going to arrive to speak to the club at the Social. It will be a powerpoint presentation that will last about 45 minutes, and she will focus on how copepods affect and are important to our reef tanks.

She owns the company oceanpods.com, which is a source to purchase copepods in a bottle to add to your system. If you would like to order a bottle or two, please let me know so I can ask her to bring them along. It costs $20 per bottle of pods. You can read up about them at www.oceanpods.com

A little history - originally Adelaide Rhodes set up a company called Seapods.com, which later was basically taken away from her by her own webmaster. After trying to resolve the problem, she eventually had to create oceanpods.com, starting all over from scratch. Some of you have purchased 'seapods' for your tanks. Well, as far as I can tell, seapods is no more. They are (or were) a sponsor on ReefCentral, but their banner is gone and their website is a dead end now. So I don't know what will end up with that company and/or any products they may have.

Adelaide will tell you more about herself at the social. I hate to state things as fact, because I may be incorrect. I'm pretty sure she is a marine biologist, and I know she has a PhD. I better stop there.

So if you are interested in buying some bottled copepods to rejuvenate your refugium and/or reef, please let me know. They will be available at the Social, and you will pay for it there. She will donate a few bottles to our raffle as well.
